Cosmetic Injectables

How can I find a good cosmetic injector?
It is getting very tough to decipher an expert from an imposter these days.  Sadly, there is no recognized certification or standard in this space - despite the claims, most injectors start treating patients after a weekend course.  The best advice is to seek out someone with the highest medical credentials and the most experience.  If delegated to a non physician, these procedures are meant to be overseen by an expert physician, who themselves do the procedures as a major part of the practice, and can handle complications should they arise.  That would be a dermatologist or plastic surgeon that performs injections themselves, or another physician that has gone through the process to change their scope of practice.

Ask yourself who is going to be there to support you in the rare instance you do have a more serious complication. We have had far too many patients come through our doors looking for support after complications from treatment at other clinics who were incapable of resolving the issues themselves.
Can you get Botox®/Filler when Pregnant or Breastfeeding?
We do not inject patients that are pregnant or even breastfeeding out of an abundance of caution, and lack of studies in this patient population.
Can I split up my injectable treatments based on my budget?
Yes, when we give patients a treatment plan it is to try to address your goals in the most complete manner possible. We let you control how quickly you would like to achieve your goals. We do give suggestions on how our patients can stagger treatments while still achieving results.
If you stop injectable treatments, will you look worse when it wears off?
No, when you stop treatment you are not worse off than when you started. This is mostly a misconception, but the logic of this thinking makes sense to us. When done properly there is no stretching of the skin or increased sagging and these other kinds of false assumptions associated with injectable treatments.

Our properly designed treatments in fact prevent aging. When you stop treatment, you go on with your natural course and timeline of aging.
How often do you see complications with Injectables?
Temporary side effects like bruising, redness and swelling are to be expected when getting a filler treatment. Serious complications associated with injections are very rare at Dermetics and we work very hard to keep it that way. We do however get patients referred to us for complications that have occurred elsewhere.

Medical Dermatology

Do I need a referral?
Yes. In Ontario, OHIP regulations require that all patients must be referred to a dermatologist by their family physician for treatment of medical dermatological conditions. Cosmetic dermatology treatments do not require a referral. If you are not sure whether your condition is medical or cosmetic, contact us and one of our patient coordinators will be happy to help.
How do referrals work?
Your family doctor will send a referral directly to us, outlining your specific condition. Our office will schedule an appointment and notify you of the date and time.To make any changes to your appointment, simply contact us.
Do I need a separate referral for each condition?
Yes. Each skin condition requires its own referral from your family doctor.
What if I don’t have a family doctor?
A walk-in clinic or your local emergency room can issue a referral as well.
How long does it take to get an appointment?
You should allow a minimum of two weeks for your referral to be processed. The date and time of your Dermetics appointment will depend on the urgency of your condition. Non-urgent appointments may be scheduled as far as six to nine months in advance. Urgent requests are accommodated on a priority basis as soon as our schedule allows.
Why are wait times so long?
There is an increasing demand for dermatology services in Ontario and a shortage of practicing dermatologists. Our office receives hundreds of referrals each day, and we do our best to process them as quickly as we can. Unfortunately, this volume also means there may be a wait on the day of your appointment. We appreciate your patience. To help us see you as quickly as possible:

- Try to avoid having to reschedule your appointments. We have limited space to accommodate changes.
- Let us know if you no longer need your appointment so we can release it to another patient.
Do you have a cancellation list?
No. Our patient volume makes managing a cancellation list impossible.
Do you offer skin surgery?
Yes. We offer a full range of dermatology services. Our dermatologist will assess your condition and determine the best type of treatment, from non-invasive procedures to skin surgery, if needed.
