Dermal Fillers
Volume loss is one of the earliest signs of aging. Signs of volume loss begin in our 30’s when our faces begin to lose that youthful fullness; eyes begin to look sunken and tired and the skin beneath them form bags which don’t disappear with a good night’s sleep. Lines deepen between the mouth and nose, lips thin and cheeks become hollow. These changes are the result of a loss of support beneath the skin including elastic tissue, collagen and – surprisingly – fat! In the past, major surgery was the only effective way to treat volume loss, but today’s approach uses dermal fillers as a safe, non-surgical way to restore lost volume and youthful facial contours.
Dermal fillers are injectable gels made from hyaluronic acid, a substance made from sugar molecules and found naturally in our bodies. At Dermetics we use Juvederm® and Restylane®, leading brands of hyaluronic acid fillers that have longstanding track records for safety and for the natural look they provide when expertly injected. Results can last between 6 and 18 months as the product is slowly broken down and absorbed by the body.
Dermal fillers are injected under the skin using a fine needle. Commonly treated areas include lips, cheeks, under the eyes and the lines between the nose and mouth. At Dermetics we pre-treat areas to be injected with a topical anaesthetic to minimize any discomfort, and some of the fillers we use also contain lidocaine, which makes injections virtually painless. Side effects can vary from patient to patient and may include mild swelling and occasionally bruising which generally subside within a few days. Touch ups are sometimes done after one or two weeks as results settle.
The effects from dermal filler injections are immediate and impressive. Improvements resemble a facelift, but without unnatural “pulled” appearance surgical facelifts can cause, which is why you’ll sometimes hear dermal filler treatments referred to as a “liquid facelift”.
